Ask ChatGPT to recommend a business coach in Dubai. Ask Gemini for a consultant in your field. Then check whether your name appears.
For most service businesses it does not, and the reason is rarely quality. It is that AI assistants do not evaluate businesses the way you assume. They do not browse your website and form an opinion. They assemble an answer from whatever the wider internet has already established about you, and if that record is thin, you are not in the running.
This article explains the actual mechanism, why the usual advice misses it, and what to fix in what order. It is written by Clause & Code, a UAE company that builds AI client systems for coaches, consultants and professional practices, and it reflects what we see repeatedly when we audit a business's AI presence before building one.
This is no longer a marginal channel
The change happened faster than most marketing plans account for.
- According to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45 percent of consumers used AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to find local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6 percent the year before.
- Adoption is highest among 30 to 44 year olds, reported at around 64 percent, which is the core buying demographic for most coaching, consulting and professional services.
- Google reported that its AI Mode passed one billion monthly users, and AI Overviews now feed directly into conversational AI Mode.
- The assistant market itself has fragmented. ChatGPT still leads, but Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity now hold meaningful share between them, which means being present in only one of them is a partial answer.
The practical implication is uncomfortable. A meaningful share of your prospects are now forming a shortlist before they ever open a search engine, and they are forming it from a conversation you are not part of.
How AI assistants actually decide who to recommend
This is the part almost nobody explains correctly, and it changes what you should do.
An AI assistant answering "recommend a business coach in Dubai" is not consulting a directory of businesses. It is doing something closer to research: pulling from a search index, reading pages it can reach, and synthesising an answer from sources that corroborate each other.
Reporting on how ChatGPT handles local queries indicates it draws on Bing indexed web results, plus sources such as Foursquare, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, industry directories, and a crawl of your own website. Notably, it does not appear to have direct access to Google reviews. Gemini, sitting inside Google's ecosystem, can use Google's own local data more directly.
Three consequences follow, and each one contradicts common advice.
- Being invisible on Bing is a real problem, not a trivia point. Most businesses submit their site to Google Search Console and stop. If Bing has not indexed you, the most used assistant in the world has very little to read.
- Your Google reviews are not the whole story. They matter, particularly for Gemini and for Google's own AI surfaces, but treating a Google Business Profile as your complete AI visibility plan leaves the largest assistant working from other sources.
- Corroboration beats claims. An assistant will not recommend a business on the strength of that business asserting it is excellent. It looks for the same entity appearing consistently across independent sources. One website saying you are good is a claim. Six sources agreeing you exist, where you are, and what you do, is evidence.
The five reasons a business ends up invisible
When Clause & Code audits a business before building its AI system, the same five failures come up almost every time.
1. Your website is not indexed, or barely
If a page is not in a search index, it effectively does not exist for any assistant that relies on search. New sites and new subdomains commonly sit unindexed for weeks unless someone actively submits them. This is the most common single cause we find, and it is also the fastest to fix.
Fix: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, both. Submit a sitemap in each. Request indexing manually for your key pages. Verify that the text of your page appears in the raw HTML rather than being drawn in by JavaScript after the fact, because a crawler that cannot read your content cannot quote it.
2. Your business is not a recognisable entity
Ask yourself whether a machine reading your website could state, without inference, the legal name of your company, the city and country it operates from, the services it sells, and who runs it.
For most service businesses the answer is no. There is a logo, some warm copy, and a contact form. That is a brand to a human and an unresolvable blur to a machine.
Fix: state the facts explicitly, in text and in structured data. Organization and ProfessionalService schema with your legal name, address, phone and links to your verified profiles. Consistent name, address and phone details everywhere you appear. An About page with real names and credentials. Clause & Code, for example, is a company registered at SRTIP in Sharjah, UAE, and stating it that plainly is not modesty lost, it is entity resolution gained.
3. Your content is not structured for extraction
Assistants quote content that answers a question completely in a small, self contained block. Most business websites are written as a flowing pitch, which reads well and extracts badly.
Fix: headings phrased as the questions people actually ask, answers given in the first sentence beneath them, and a real FAQ section marked up with FAQPage schema. Write each answer so it still makes sense quoted alone, with no surrounding context. See our guide on building pages built for extraction.
4. You exist in only one place on the internet
A single website with no directory listings, no reviews, no third party mentions and no social profiles gives an assistant exactly one source. Assistants weight corroborated information heavily, because a single unverified source is a risk they are built to avoid.
Fix: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, get listed in credible directories relevant to your country and industry, complete your LinkedIn company page properly, and earn genuine mentions through guest content, podcasts, partnerships and client sites. Ask every satisfied client for a review. Reviews are the highest leverage trust asset available to a small service business, and most never ask.
5. You have no presence inside the assistants themselves
Everything above concerns being found. This point concerns being useful once you are.
You can publish your own assistant inside these platforms: a custom GPT on ChatGPT, a Gem on Google Gemini, and an AI trained on your content answering your Instagram DMs through Meta AI. These do not make strangers discover you. They do something different and equally valuable: when someone who already knows your name goes looking, or when a follower messages at midnight, there is something intelligent there, trained on your expertise, that answers and routes them to your booking.
This is the layer Clause & Code builds as a single connected system, and it is the piece most businesses have not touched at all.
The mistake almost every provider makes
Two claims circulate in this market and both are wrong.
"Publish a custom GPT and ChatGPT will recommend you." It will not. A published GPT is a tool you distribute to your own audience. It does not enter the assistant's recommendation logic.
"Add schema and you will appear in AI answers." Structured data makes you readable, not recommendable. Readability is necessary and not sufficient. Without corroboration across sources, a perfectly marked up page still loses to a competitor with fifty reviews and eight directory listings.
Anyone guaranteeing you placement inside AI answers is overselling. Nobody controls those outputs. What can be controlled is whether you are indexed, legible, corroborated and present. Businesses that get all four right are the ones that show up. We tell prospects this before they hire us, because the alternative is selling a promise the technology does not support.
The order to fix it in
Sequence matters more than effort here. Doing item five before item one produces nothing.
- Get indexed. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, sitemaps submitted, indexing requested. Days, not weeks.
- Become an entity. Schema markup, explicit business facts, real names, real address, consistent details everywhere.
- Restructure for extraction. Question based headings, direct answers, FAQ block with schema.
- Build corroboration. Google Business Profile, directory listings, reviews, LinkedIn, mentions. This is the slowest and the most durable.
- Publish your assistants and connect them. Custom GPT, Gemini Gem, Instagram AI, all routing to your booking so the attention converts.
Steps one to three are a few days of focused work. Step four compounds over months. Step five is what turns visibility into bookings, which is why doing it without the first four is the most common wasted effort we see.
What this looks like when it is done properly
A business that has completed all five has a specific shape. Its pages are indexed in both major search indexes. A machine reading it can state the company name, location, services and prices without guessing. Its key pages answer real questions in extractable blocks. It appears consistently across its own site, a Google Business Profile, several directories and a handful of independent mentions, with reviews accumulating. And it has its own AI assistants, live on ChatGPT, Gemini and Instagram, each one trained on its expertise and each one routing conversations to a booking page.
That combination is what Clause & Code installs as one connected system rather than five separate projects, because the pieces only work together. An assistant with no routing collects nothing. A structured website with no corroboration ranks nowhere. Reviews with no capture flow produce enquiries that die in an inbox.
Next step
If you want to know where your business currently stands, the fastest version is to open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask each one to recommend a business like yours in your city. Whatever comes back is your real baseline.
If you would rather have it built than diagnosed, that is what we do. Clause & Code installs a complete AI client system for coaches, consultants and professional practices: an AI readable landing page, your own custom GPT, your Gemini Gem, Meta AI answering your Instagram DMs, and the routing that connects all of it to your booking. Fixed price, installed in days.
